Military Service: Staff Sergeant - U.S. Air Force
Comments:

I have lived in Fort Pierce since graduation except 4 year in the U.S. Air Force. As when I was in school, I have continued to play music mostly locally on a continuous basis.
Jan 15, 2012 - As of now I am down to one band again, only the Easy People. Makes it easier just playing ocasionally and for larger jobs. I guess we are getting too old to spend 3 night a week honky tonkin'. Still love it as much as always although.

School Story:

Sorry but from the beginning of 7th grade to the end of 12th, I didn't care to much about it and I guess I pretty much showed that in my attitude and grades. I don't ever remember taking a book home or even giving a crap about what the class was doing. What a big change from 6th grade with Mrs. Dugan. I was pretty much on or near the honor roll all the time.
IRCC was when I finally took school seriously again. I only received an Associates Degree, but managed to accumulate in the area of 126 Credit Hours. It took me a few years to decide what I wanted a degree in and basically took classes that I was interested in. I love the time a spent at IRCC. (Sorry DMHS, I had a pile of friends but just never got serious about you.) I did like my time in Mr. West's class. What a difference from Mr. Price's English class. I always felt if he spent less time looking down his nose he would have been a better teacher. Not that he wasn't smart, but you have to make a student feel like he can identify with you. Now, Mr. Beidenharn, I did like his class. I would skip PE and spend two periods with him. One day, Coach Chapman saw me watching my class from the Art room window. He came running around the building to catch me and Mr. B hid me in that closet that was between the rooms of the portable. Coach Chapman caught up with me at the end of the year and made me run a mile for everyday he had taken roll and had me marked absent. He gave me a "D" so I could graduate. I guess he was pretty good guy too. Well, time to take my wife for lunch (it is her birthday today - Jan 15) Plus she thinks I am writing a note to my girlfriend or something (just kidding)

Gail Theresa Hurst of Winter Garden, Florida | 1951 - 2018 | Obituary

Gail Theresa Hurst

December 01, 1951 - February 05, 2018

Gail Theresa Hurst was born December 1, 1951 to the late Charles and Margaret Hurst in Fort Pierce, Florida. She accepted God at an early age and was baptized at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Fort Pierce. In her formative years she attended segregated public schools in St. Lucie County. Where in 1968 became first graduating class to integrate Dan McCarty High during the turbulent years of racial unrest. The racial inequities in her youth left an indelible impression on her life. She was inspired by her grandmother, Viola Jay and mothers’ community social activism astutely aware of her humble beginnings from mothers’ staged debates against sisters and oldest brother on topics of racial inequality.

She obtained a Bachelors’ Degree from Florida A&M University and became a License Dietician working with the elderly and less fortunate in Tallahassee, Florida. In the mid-seventies she was employed by Indian River Community College as Coordinator of a Federal funded program to meet educational needs of migrant workers. She obtained a Master’s Degree from Nova Southeastern University in Education. In 1978 Gail embarked on another professional endeavor to give back to enrich educational needs of our youth. She taught third grade in Orange County Public schools retiring in 2012 after 35 years of dedicated service.

She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Epsilon-Epsilon Zeta Chapter actively servicing her community and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church of Orlando. Monday morning, February 5, 2018, Gail quietly passed away at Vitas Hospital in Winter Garden, Florida after a long illness. Gail without question was dedicated to her family had a unique relationship with each member.  Her loving generous and kindred spirit could only be equaled by the contagious nature of her smile and quick wit.

Those who will always cherish her giving, and nurture her memories, she leaves to mourn her passing: one daughter, Lori Tramble of Orlando, Florida; one granddaughter and grandson, Tahara Cherry and Vincent Haslam of Orlando; two sisters, Regina Hurst of U. S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Sheryl Hurst- Williams of Ft. We have received information that Marcus has passed away but as yet don't have any details.  I found his Facebook page but it didn't lead to anything.  There are no obituaries that match him anywhere even though we received information that there is one.  But, the email address that was given no longer works.
